Therapists for college students near Northeastern University
I specialize in substance use disorders and addiction but can help anyone looking to address their relationship with substances, even if you don't think your problem is serious. I also can help with other impulse or compulsive issues such as gaming or internet addiction disorders. I use a Harm Reduction approach, meaning I don't think abstinence from use is the right answer for everyone, and can help identify what skills you need to make the changes you'd like to make. I'm also a trained trauma therapist and have worked with a wide range of clients on addressing numerous types of trauma including combat-related and sexual traumas. My office is located in Harvard Square but I can also provide virtual session (over FaceTime or VSee) for appropriate clients.
The years surrounding college --young adulthood--is a time filled with amazing exploration as well as stress, sadness, and a lot of unknowns. We really begin to learn not just about who we have been to others, but about who we can become. Working with a therapist can offer a way to explore some of these feelings and experiences with someone who has first hand understanding of being a youg adult (we all were at one time!), who wants to get to know who you are becoming and help you find a way to get there with a sense of power and voice. Life can be awesome but it can also be scary and hard sometimes and no-one has to do this alone!
I work with individuals who are experiencing difficulties in their lives due to transitions, low self-esteem, mood disorders and anxiety. My approach to therapy is both goal oriented and insight oriented. I believe in a holistic approach to therapy that is person-centered and strengths-based. I use mindfulness-based techniques to help clients calm their minds, focus on the present and connect with their physical bodies. I believe that clients know themselves best and, through partnering with clients, I help them to live their best lives. I am a licensed Mental Health Counselor with a degree in Mental Health Counseling and Expressive Arts Therapies and a Certified Life Coach and Wellness Coach. I work with a range of diagnostic presentations, including depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD and adjustment disorders.

I am certain that the warm, and nonjudgmental environment that I provide will help you feel safe and supported as you explore the problems that interfere with the way that you want to live your life. I am pleased that you have enough self-awareness to realize that you need to act now. I am a licensed psychologist with broad therapeutic interests: issues related to parenting, migration, intimate relationship, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, life transitions, and low self-esteem. I have over twenty years of experience helping clients better understand themselves, reduce their suffering, and increase their capacity for joyful living. Successful therapy depends on a good fit between therapist and client; it's precisely the quality of the collaborative therapeutic relationship that is central to healing. Your concerns don't have to be severe to justify making the first call.
I am accepting new clients! I believe in the power of therapy to help people connect with inner wisdom, explore and build upon strengths, and process difficulties in a supportive and non-judgmental space. I view the therapeutic relationship as being fundamental to growth and change, as it lays the groundwork for you to work through vulnerable feelings and explore relational patterns. I try to foster this relationship by connecting on a human level and providing an atmosphere of care, acceptance, openness, curiosity, and humility. While I tend not to give advice, I may share new perspectives, offer tools for change, or help you draw connections between current patterns and past experiences. I deeply respect your decision to seek therapy and look forward to getting to know you.

Allison loves working individually with young adults. She enjoys helping people with a variety of mental illnesses, including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, transitional related stress, and stress due to family dynamics. Allison also enjoys helping people with general stress related to changes in life or general dissatisfaction with parts of your life. Allison practices from a client-centered approach, using a variety of techniques and through talk therpay. Deciding to see a therapist requires awareness and regard for oneself. I have deep respect for what has brought you here, and this will form the foundation of our work together. Perhaps you seek therapy now because of a crisis that is presenting new challenges or bringing up old, unresolved problems. Or you now feel ready to address a long-standing pattern that has caused much difficulty and pain over time. Your struggles may be affecting not only your relationships with others but also how you relate to yourself. My job is to help you expand your capacity for what you can do alone. I offer a combination of psychoanalytic and CBT/DBT informed approaches while being mindful of both the universality and cultural individuality of our experiences. I have worked extensively with a range of people, from those in the throes of PTSD or addiction to ones dealing with transitions or looking for greater connection in relationships.
